My Story: How I went from having extreme gut pains, constipation/diarrhea, irritability and hormone imbalances to pain free gut, regular bowels, less mom rage and balanced hormones.
Hi! My name is Christine and it’s so great to meet you!
If you are taking the time to read this, it’s probably because you stumbled across my story, resonated with my gut health issues and hormone imbalance (including cortisol imbalance) and want to know exactly how I healed my hormone imbalance issues and gut health.
My journey started when I was a baby, I was very colicky and my parents didn’t know what to do. When I was about two I was anemic again no source of why. When I was a child and right up to February 2024 I would get extremely bad stomach pains and spent a lot of time in the bathroom.
When I was 11 I ended up with an eating disorder called dysphagia (difficultly swallowing). No idea what triggered it and it took years to get over. I would have to eat my meals with glasses of water to help swallow food, and I could not have people around me watching me eat, as it made me feel like I was going to choke.
This is where the hormone imbalance I have been dealing with really started and why my hormones were so out of balance. I was already in a state of chronic stress before I was a teen. My periods started when I was 11 and they were extremely painful, I would lay on the floor curled up in a ball, my flow was extremely heavy and I would not want to go out for days, I was never regular either I didn’t know when it was going to start or end.
I moved to Ottawa when I was 20 and I felt like there was a stress that had been lifted off of me at least for a short while. After a few years of living there not only did my stomach pains come back but I started losing feeling in my feet.
It was bad, if I went for runs or walks I would need someone to come and get me. I underwent testing for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), but it came back negative every time. (They tested me for 5 years).
This is where my whole view on food changed. My neurologist told me about a Dr in the USA who had been diagnosed with MS and was in a full tilt recline wheel chair, had all the best doctors to help her but nothing was working. SO! She decided to change her diet to a Paleo diet (hunter gather diet) with no nightshades (peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and eggplant). Heres the kicker within months she was walking and with in a year back to riding bikes with her family. This blew my mind at how powerful food and nutrients are for our body.
This meant that she did not eat Gluten, Dairy, Processed Foods the foods that she did eat were organic and grass fed and all natural. Now in saying that I dont eat organic as I cant afford it but this lead me to watching tons of documentaries and reading countless books. I needed to understand this more. The first thing I did was start to cut out gluten and milk (still ate cheese as I loved it). Since cutting out gluten for the most part then I noticed I stopped losing the feeling in my feet. I started to also become very cautious of what foods hurt my stomach and which ones were okay. You can say I started to become obsessed with nutrition.
However I still had really bad hormone imbalance. Before getting pregnant at 28 I had two miscarriages and looking back now and seeing all the stresses I had been through it was no wonder. Then 3 months into my pregnancy of my oldest my husband decided to leave me, so I travelled 6 hours to be back home with my family.
After my daughter was born I knew I had to make some hard decisions I didn’t have a career and all I could think was I want her to have a good life. So I decided to go back to school full time when she was 7 months old. I did it! I completed 3 years with honours and was a proud momma. During that time I underwent testing for ADHD and to my surprise I was actually diagnosed with PTSD. But in reality it was not hard to believe looking back at what I had been through. The stomach pains, eating disorder, the breakdown of my marriage it was a lot.
Fast-forward a few years I met my rock and soul-mate and a year and a half into our relationship with no issues at all I was pregnant. A few months in though and things with my body started to change, I don’t know if part of it was the PTSD of what happened in my first marriage and pregnancy but I started to just feel different. I had extreme pains in my hips, I didn’t want to be touched and just felt blah, I hated how I looked and lost all the confidence I had in myself. I had no energy, I was tired all the time and I was dizzy. Looking back it was the start to my adrenals not pumping out enough cortisol and my hormones just being even farther from normal.
After giving birth to my second daughter it took a while for my body to come back to what was sort of normal. But four months after my daughter was born BAM I was pregnant again. I was excited but it was stressful at the same time.
Both of these pregnancies were through COVID as well so I was homeschooling my oldest when the second was born and then I was taking care of a newborn, homeschooling and pregnant a year later. I was stressed OUT and exhausted there was no time for rest!!!!
After our son was born I was an emotional wreck. I felt like my body had been hit by a freight truck and all life had been sucked out of me, I was fully depleted of all nutrients. I knew this is where I had to take action and get my life back but how.
I was now back to work and hated life I was stressed to the nines having to commute and so I told my husband that I either need to go to school part-time online or find a new job. This is when I decided to start taking Holistic Nutrition as I have such a strong passion for understanding gut health and of course a couple months later I also started a new job.
I tell you I don’t know how to slow down despite feeling drained all the time. It was a year later and I finally decided to meet with a naturopath. I was getting frustrated I had changed my diet and started taking supplements that I had been taught in school would help with my energy, fatigue and overall health but nothing changed.
It was not until my naturopath ran a DUTCH test - dried urine test that I found out that all 3 types of estrogen were low, my progesterone was low, my testosterone was normal to low. My adrenal function was normal but my DHEA-S was low due to inflammation and so I was recommended to take an adrenal support and manage stress. My cortisol was low even though my body favoured active cortisol vs inactive which was good but it still put me in the bracket of adrenal fatigue and HPA axis dysfunction. My neurotransmitters (first line of stress defence) was low and I produced way too much melatonin during the day and too much cortisol at night and my pleasure hormone dopamine was low. So, this was the reason to why I was feeling:
👉low energy
👉brain fog
👉fatigued
👉dizzy
👉low mood
👉trouble sleeping/waking at 3am
and the list went on and thats when I decided to give Hormone Replacement Therapy a try.
After a year of hormone replacement therapy, eating a healthy diet, taking supplements daily, doing mindfulness meditation, exercises like yoga, I thought I would have been in a better place, but I still struggled with my hormones.
That’s when I stumbled upon the mental wellness company who were using natural supplements to help with gut health, mental health, balancing hormones, reducing inflammation, improving focus, increasing energy and happiness, eliminating anxiousness and promoting stress resilience.
These were all the things I had learned about in my years of reading and school when it came to addressing the root cause behind so many issues. As I dug in to the company, I began reading about the gut brain axis and the importance of addressing the complete body system. The gut… the brain…. and the vagus nerve.
I figured out the missing piece!!
For so long, I was only eating gluten free as I am celiac and foods that are natural, alive and good quality, along with taking a hand full of supplements including probiotics, it still was not getting to the root of my cortisol imbalance, adrenal fatigue and hormone imbalance. What I was missing was the understanding that the probiotics that we hear of in yogurt and that you can buy in the store dont actually make it to the area of the gut that we need it to be and that if we dont have a good quality prebiotic the microbes dont have anything to feed off of so they feed of the mucus. This creates inflammation, fluctuation in blood pressure, blood sugar imbalances and more.
With being a supplement snob, I needed to make sure everything I was taking had no side effects, contained no toxins, no chemicals, no artificial flavours or sweeteners, was gluten free, and was of top notch quality. As I continued to do my research, I began putting the science together as to why I felt the way I did. I knew a bit about cortisol and how it was one of our defences against stress, but never realized the complexity imbalanced cortisol levels had.
When we have imbalanced levels of cortisol this can also contribute
👉stress response disruption - can’t cope with stress
👉fatigue and weakness - persistent fatigue, weakness and lethargy - reduced interest in sexual activity and lack stamina required for intimacy
👉mood changes - depression, anxiety and irritability
👉hormone imbalance - testosterone, estrogen and progesterone
👉physical symptoms - muscle weakness, joint pain, digestive disruption
I thought the only way to deal with these symptoms was to eat a healthy diet, take supplements and do mindfulness activities like yoga, walks, baths and breathing techniques. When we deal with stress, cortisol will pump out into the blood. But the big problem that most of us face, is we aren’t suppose to live in a place of chronic stress. Meaning….life happens…. stress will come, and then we’re suppose to move out of that place.
When we don’t that long term output of cortisol can wreaks havoc on the nervous system. And it becomes one domino effect after another effecting your stress, mood, energy, hormones and gut. It’s why you feel the way you feel. It’s your body sending warning signs to take care of your mental health and strengthen your stress resilience.
If you can calm your nervous system down and balance your cortisol, you will find yourself in a place of stress resilience and your symptoms will go away one by one.
Within weeks of taking the happy juice protocol along with the ignite for her (link with a $10 off coupon in linktree), I started to notice a huge difference in how I was feeling overall, I was sleeping through the night and I was calmer, and had less digestive symptoms, my kids and husbands noticed that I didn’t have my mom rage anymore and I even lost 10 lbs.
This fuelled my fire to want to share this with as many people as I could. So I partnered with the company as an affiliate and now I help people get their lives back by sharing these supplements. I started sharing on social media because I knew that there would be people struggling with the VERY SAME thing and feeling hopeless that they would ever get to the root of their cortisol imbalance.
I love that this happy juice protocol is simple , clean, effective, and yummy! ($10 off when you use my link)
